Georgia State vs Western Michigan

Georgia State vs Western Michigan : After pummeling Delaware State 68-0 last week at home, the Western Michigan Broncos hit the road this week for an intriguing contest with the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday. It’s the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and GSU is also 1-2 this season after coming off of a 7-5 (5-3 Sun Belt) campaign in 2017.

How to watch Georgia State vs Western Michigan

Western Michigan Broncos (1-2) at Georgia State Panthers (1-2)
College Football: Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm (Georgia State Stadium)
The Line: Georgia State Panthers +7.5 — Over/Under:

The Georgia State Panthers will also be looking to climb back to .500 after dropping back-to-back outings, including a 59-22 loss to Memphis last time out. Dan Ellington has completed 61% of his 82 pass attempts this season for 488 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception while Destin Coates is GSU’s leading rusher with 120 yards on 20 carries. Penny Hart is Georgia State’s lone 100-yard receiver this season with a team-high 12 catches for 134 yards this season. Georgia State’s offense is averaging 326 yards per game through the first three games this season while scoring just 17.7 points per game this season.

Western Michigan is 19-9 ATS in their last 28 road games and 23-11 ATS in their last 34 games following a win while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the Sun Belt. Georgia State is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games in September while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 home games.

I’m not reading too much into Western Michigan routing Delaware State, however the Broncos have had a slightly tougher schedule in my opinion compared to Georgia State. The problem for Georgia State is that the Broncos have found scoring points much easier than the Panthers have and have been solid on the road for a few seasons now. All in all, I’ll side with the Broncos to keep up their offensive prowess and I’ll lay the points on the road here.

Louisville vs Virginia

Louisville vs Virginia : Both the Louisville Cardinals and the Virginia Cavaliers will open up ACC play on Saturday as they will square off against each other at Scott Stadium.

Last week, Louisville won a nail-biter against Western Kentucky 20-17 as the Cardinals came back from a 17-0 deficit. Virginia was much more successful in their win last week against Ohio 45-31 in a game that was relocated from Charlottesville to Nashville, Tennessee, due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.

Saturday will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Cardinals and Cavaliers with Louisville holding a slight 4-2 edge.

How to watch Louisville vs Virginia

When: 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.

TV: FOX Sports South in Louisville; full list of regional affiliates here.

Radio: WHAS-840.

Live stream:

Line: Virginia by 5.5 (via

Series: Louisville leads 4-2, including 3-1 since the Cardinals joined the ACC for the 2014 season.

Last meeting: Louisville won, 38-21, in 2017 at Cardinal Stadium.

Three games into the season, Louisville is still searching for its identity and will start a freshman at quarterback to open ACC play. On the road in a tough environment and against a tough-minded defense, it is hard to go against Virginia.

The Cavaliers’ offense was clicking on all cylinders during the first half of last week’s game against Ohio. Quarterback Bryce Perkins seems to be comfortable in this offense and he has the weapons to do some damage. Virginia makes a triumphant return home by doing enough to secure the key conference victory in Scott Stadium.

Final Score: Virginia 31, Louisville 17

North Carolina vs Pittsburgh

North Carolina vs Pittsburgh : The Pittsburgh Panthers and the North Carolina Tar Heels will be meeting up in college football action from Kenan Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Pitt is sitting at 2-1 so far this year. The Panthers opened up with a 33-7 win over Albany, then were crushed 51-6 by Penn State and took a 24-10 win in their last game against Georgia Tech.

How to watch North Carolina vs Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Panthers (2-1) at North Carolina Tar Heels (0-2)
College Football: Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 12:20 pm (Kenan Stadium)
The Line: North Carolina Tar Heels +3 — Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

In that GT game, Pittsburgh QB Kenny Picket logged 197 yards and a pick, while Qadree Ollison was the top rusher for the Panthers on 17 carries for 91 yards and two TDs. Taysir Mack had 95 yards on four catches to lead the Pitt receivers.

Over on the North Carolina side, they are currently 0-2 thus far. The Tar Heels fell to California in the opener 24-17, then were beaten by East Carolina 41-19. NC’s hope opener was postponed due to the hurricane this past Saturday.

In the East Carolina game, the Tar Heels’ Nathan Elliott posted 219 yards on 22-of-38 passing, with Anthony Ratliff-Williams doing most of the work on 84 yards and four catches. Antonio Williams led the Heels with 96 yards from six carries on the ground.

The Panthers are 5-1 ATS in their last six conference games and 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games in September. Pittsburgh is 1-4-2 ATS in their last seven following a striaght-up win and the under is 6-0 in their last six road games.

Meanwhile, the Heels are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five on grass. North Carolina is 0-3-1 ATS in their last four in September and 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games.

Thanks to the terrible weather this weekend, things are a little off-kilter coming into this game for the Tar Heels. It’s been a long couple of weeks, and there are still many lingering storm effects to deal with out that way. In any case, looking at this from a football standpoint Pitt seems like the logical choice. They’ve got some good playmakers and if things go well on the field I don’t see a whole lot of pushback. Give me the Panthers.

SMU vs Navy

SMU vs Navy : The Navy Midshipmen and SMU Mustangs meet Saturday in college football action at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

The Navy Midshipmen look for their first road win of the season to put together a three-game winning streak. The Navy Midshipmen have lost each of their last five road games. Garret Lewis is completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 159 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. Lewis and Malcolm Perry have combined for one touchdown pass and one interception. CJ Williams and Taylor Jackson have combined for 199 receiving yards on 10 receptions while Ryan Mitchell has one reception. The Navy Midshipmen ground game is averaging 358 yards per contest, and Perry leads the way with 497 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively, Navy is allowing 33.7 points and 412 yards per game. Hudson Sullivan leads the Navy Midshipmen with 17 tackles, Taylor Heflin has two sacks and Jarid Ryan has two interceptions.

How to watch SMU vs Navy

Date: Saturday, September 22nd

Kickoff Time: Noon EST

Betting Line: Navy -7.5, FPI: 50.5%

Series Record: Navy leads series 12-7 and are on an 8 game winning streak.

Last Meeting: Navy won 43-40, November 11th, 2017

The SMU Mustangs look for their first victory of the season to prevent their first 0-4 start since the 2014 season. The SMU Mustangs have won six of their last eight home games. Ben Hicks is completing 47.4 percent of his passes for 476 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Hicks has two or more touchdown passes in six of his last 10 games. James Proche and Braeden West have combined for 399 receiving yards and four touchdowns while Reggie Roberson Jr. has six receptions. The SMU Mustangs ground game is averaging 81.6 yards per contest, and West leads the way with 129 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, SMU is allowing 44.3 points and 450 yards per game. Rodney Clemons leads the SMU Mustangs with 23 tackles, Patrick Nelson has 1.5 sacks and Shaine Hailey has one interception.

The Midshipmen are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games in September, 19-8-3 ATS in their last 30 games on fieldturf and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Mustangs are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games in September, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Midshipmen are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings in Southern Methodist, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings and the favorite is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

The Navy Midshipmen have looked shaky at best despite the 2-1 start and now go on the road where they have lost five straight games. The SMU Mustangs have been downright awful this season and have allowed no less than 38 points in each of their last seven games. SMU also isn’t covering games during these losses and is just 3-5 ATS in its last eight games when an underdog of at least three points. Navy has failed to cover its last four games as a favorite of at least three points, but it has had no trobule lighting SMU on fire offensively over the years. I don’t want to eat chalk with Navy on the road, but I don’t want to back SMU given its defensive issues that carried over from last year. So, give me the Midshipmen based on how past meetings between these clubs have gone.

Akron vs Iowa State

Akron vs Iowa State : The Iowa State community will close out a horrible week by coming together to watch the Cyclones at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday.

The matchup with Akron will be more about helping the school, alumni and fans remember one of their own. Former Big 12 champion golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena was found stabbed to death earlier this week while playing at a local course.

The Cyclones (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) and Zips (2-0) will wear helmet stickers with Barquin’s initials. The Iowa State band will also form the shape of “CBA” to honor Barquin before the game following a video tribute to Barquin on the scoreboard.

Game Time: 12:00 ET
Venue: Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, IA

Iowa State has seen the importance of turnover margin firsthand through the first two-plus years under Matt Campbell. When the Cyclones have lost or tied the turnover margin, they’re 1-14, including 0-2 this season (tying it with Oklahoma and losing it versus Iowa).

Akron ranked No. 73 nationally in total defense last season, showing improvement as the season went along en route to reaching the MAC Championship. Two games into 2018, the Zips rank No. 35 in FBS. That defensive ability is what stands out as Iowa State ramps up preparation.

That performance, in fact, has Iowa State on high alert.

“Defensively, their front-four, outstanding. Their front-four is why it really starts to go their way in the second half,” Campbell said of Akron’s upset. “They’re able to get pressure on the quarterback, he’s going down, instead of going down and taking the sack he throws the football, pick-6, goes [97]. The next pick-6 same situation, he’s rushed out of the pocket, throws it away and their guy makes an unbelievable play and goes in for a touchdown. Elite defense gives you the opportunity to be a really good football team and they have that.”

Maryland vs Minnesota

Maryland vs Minnesota : It would be a lot easier to feel good about a win vs. Maryland this weekend if I had full confidence that Zack Annexstad was going to be playing for the Gophers. Let’s just say I find Coach Fleck’s public statements on the matter (combined with his preference to make injury decisions clear at kickoff) less than inspiring.

What? It’s a cat riding a turtle! The gnomes were supposed to pass on posting that even though it has no relevance to their feelings of excitement and confusion about how this game is supposed to go? Just look at the kitty on the turtle and be happy.

How to watch Maryland vs Minnesota

Date: Saturday, September 22nd

Kickoff Time: 11:00 am CT

Where: Capitol One Field at Maryland Stadium, College Park, MD

TV: Big Ten Network

Spread: Minnesota is currently a 2.5 to 3 point underdog.

O/U: 46.5

Zack Annexstad needs to play. And if he plays he needs to be alive and healthy the entire time. Hopefully Zack is healed enough to play effectively on Saturday. And if he is then the offensive line needs to not practice their Matt Kalil impersonations during the game. Yes, I know Halloween is coming up and you’re busy guys but there are more appropriate times to work on that.
Shut down Maryland’s running game. I think Minnesota can feast against an inconsistent and weak Maryland passing attack, but first they need to shut down the Terps on the ground and force them to pass. If they do that I have visions of Terell Smith and Antoine Winfield Jr. making big plays dancing in my head.
Be solid on special teams. The non-conference allowed all of the Gophers specialists to put on a clinic in a least one game. I think this one is going to be close, which means we need them to be solid (not spectacular, but solid) all game long.

I’m skeptical still that Minnesota’s defense can stop the run, and that the Gopher offense can stay on track on the road. Both things they weren’t able to do last season.

That being said, Maryland’s passing game has been anemic at best. I don’t foresee a ton of points in this game as I believe both teams will stack the box and force their young quarterbacks to beat them through the air.

I have more confidence in Annexstad and Minnesota’s passing game weapons than I do Maryland’s, and the Gophers are 4-0 into the bye.
Minnesota 21, Maryland 20

Rutgers vs Buffalo

Rutgers vs Buffalo : The Buffalo Bulls and Rutgers Scarlet Knights meet Saturday in college football action at Stadium.

The Buffalo Bulls look for their second road win of the season to start 4-0 for the first time in well over a decade. The Buffalo Bulls have split their last six road games. Tyree Jackson is completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 789 yards, 12 touchdowns and one interception. Jackson has 18 touchdown passes in his last five games. K.J. Osborn and Anthony Johnson have combined for 507 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while Charlie Jones has six receptions. The Buffalo Bulls ground game is averaging 156.6 yards per contest, and Kevin Marks leads the way with 219 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Buffalo is allowing 22.3 points and 373.3 yards per game. Khalil Hodge leads the Buffalo Bulls with 32 tackles, Chuck Harris has 3.5 sacks and Cameron Lewis has two interceptions.

Date: Saturday, September 22
Game Time: 12:00 ET
Venue: Stadium, Piscataway, NJ
Network: BTN

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights could use a feel good home victory to get back to a .500 record. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have won four of their last six home games. Artur Sitkowski is completing 49.3 percent of his passes for 290 yards, one touchdown and seven interceptions. Sitkowski and Giovanni Rescigno have combined for one touchdown pass and eight interceptions. Jerome Washington and Bo Melton have combined for 156 receiving yards on 14 receptions while Raheem Blackshear has 12 receptions. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights ground game is averaging 218 yards per contest, and Blackshear leads the way with 195 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Rutgers is allowing 38 points and 430.7 yards per game. Trevor Morris leads the Rutgers Scarlet Knights with 26 tackles, Elorm Lumor has two sacks and Blessuan Austin has one interception.

The Bulls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, 5-2 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games overall. The Scarlet Knights are 4-10 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The over is 4-0 in Scarlet Knights last 4 games following a ATS loss and the over is 4-1-1 in Bulls last 6 games overall.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were just dominated by the Kansas Jayhawks and have given up a combined 107 points in their last two games. I’m surprised this line is this low. The Buffalo Bulls have been very sharp out of the gate, which includes a road win over a solid program in the Temple Owls, and Tyree Jackson is putting up Heisman numbers through the first three games. Sure, nobody expected Buffalo to be this good and some are probably still on the fence, but eating the small chalk certainly beats backing a Rutgers squad that’s fresh off getting pounded by a notoriously bad Kansas team. I’ll eat the small number with Buffalo, even if it’s a fade from Rutgers more than anything else.

Ole Miss vs Kent State

Ole Miss vs Kent State : The Kent State Golden Flashes and the Ole Miss Rebels will meet up on the gridiron in week 4 college football action from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, MS on Saturday afternoon.

The Kent State Golden Flashes will look to get back to .500 after falling to 1-2 with a 63-10 blowout loss at the hands of Penn State in their last outing. Woody Barrett threw for 176 yards and a touchdown on 20 of 38 passing, while Dustin Crum led the Flashes with 23 rushing yards. Antwan Dixon led Kent State with 5 catches for 59 yards, while Mike Carrigan came right behind with 58 yards and a touchdown with his 3 grabs. Defensively, Elvis Hines had an interception and KJ Sherald had a sack while Dalton Hicks and Jamal Parker tied for the Kent State lead with 4 tackles in the loss.

The Ole Miss Rebels will be back in action in Oxford this Saturday. After getting stomped by the Alabama Crimson Tide (read: Flying Death Machine) the Rebs welcome the Kent State Golden Flashes to The Grove. The Rebs seek a 3-1 record at the quarter-point of the season before they get back to conference action next week against the vaunted LSU Tigers.

The Rebels are certainly hoping that their defensive efforts are shored up. In their first three games, they have given up, on average, 43.3 points per game. Among the 130 FBS teams, that mark lands them 125th. They are allowing 338.7 yards through the air and 201.7 yards on the ground per game, totaling up a mark of 540.3 yards per game and 6.2 yards per play. Those numbers are, for lack of a better term, grim.

Luckily (?) Kent State’s offense isn’t much of a juggernaut. They’ve averaged 395.3 yards per game, 202 through the air and 193.3 on the ground. Their PPG of 29.3 puts them 79th out of 130, which hashes out to just below average in that category.

Woody Barrett is a definite dual-threat that they’ll have to account for, though. He’s completed 57.5 percent of his passes so far with four TDs and three INTs. Running the ball, he’s got 117 yards (third-most on the team) and two rushing touchdowns (second-most). It’s yet to be seen if he’ll have a ‘career day’ against the Rebel defense, but they should still take stock in what he brings to the table.

Justin Rankin is the team’s leading rusher, with 199 yards on the ground on a 6.6 YPC clip. Meanwhile, Mike Carrigan and Antwan Dixon both have over 100 receiving yards so far this season. They will be the key targets on offense for Barrett, so we’ll see how Ole Miss defends them.

Defending Ole Miss has been a problem for many teams, save for Alabama. Kent State’s defense also ranks below the 100 mark. They rank 111th in scoring defense (36 PPG) and allow 247 yards in the air and 215.3 on the ground. That’s gotta make Scottie Phillips salivate, as he’ll have a chance to cut through the Golden Flashes defense. The Nasty Wide Outs are likely looking to spring back to prominence after being held down a week ago. Chances are, D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown among others will get their due this week. Jordan Ta’amu should be able to bounce back, as well.

All told, this should be a victory for Ole Miss. But much like there others, it could be a tough one to claim thanks to their defense. They won’t be facing a powerhouse this week, so we’ll see if they can hold down the fort.

Boston College vs Purdue

Boston College vs Purdue : The Purdue Boilermakers look to rebound from a last-second loss to Missouri and get into the win column for the first time this season when they play host to the Boston College Eagles on Saturday at Rose-Ade Stadium.

The game, which is the first meeting between the schools, is scheduled for a noon ET kickoff.

Boston College (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) is a 6.5-point favorite, according to OddsShark. The Eagles are coming off a 41-34 win over Wake Forest in Week 3 and have scored 40 or more points in their first three games of the season for the first time in program history.

How to watch Boston College vs Purdue

After dropping three straight games at home, Purdue will host undefeated Boston College on Saturday afternoon looking to notch its first win of the season. The Boilermakers have come close but have just not been able to get over the hump. Getting their first win against Boston College will not be easy, as the Eagles fly into Big Ten territory with the look of a formidable ACC program on the rise with a throwback style that would fit right in with the Big Ten.

AJ Dillon will be the star of the show for Boston College, but the Eagles also bring a solid defense to the table that should make for some interesting battles with a Purdue offense that continues to try keeping things open. Can Boston College win its first road game against a Big Ten team since winning at Penn State in 2003?

The Purdue Sports Properties announcers are scheduled to be Tim Newton (play-by-play), Pete Quinn (analyst), and Kelly Kitchell (sideline).

Boston College may not be ready to make a serious run at Clemson for the ACC crown, but the Eagles do have the look of a team not to be taken lightly. On the road against Purdue, Boston College is going to get a good battle from its Big Ten opposition. Jeff Brohm’s team is trying to re-learn what it takes to win after a surprise 2017 season, and the Boilers have come close. This one could very well go down to the wire once again for Purdue, but Boston College has the look of a confident team that will be ready to make a few more plays to lead them to victory and a 4-0 record for the first time since 2007.

Prediction: Boston College 34, Purdue 31

Michigan vs Nebraska

Michigan vs Nebraska : The Big Ten season is finally here for the Michigan Wolverines as they face the Nebraska Cornhuskers this Saturday at 12pm at the Big House. It’s been a pretty rough start to the season for most of the conference. The Cornhuskers are having a much rougher go of things early in the season than the Wolverines are. They enter conference play winless, at 0-2 (their opener against Akron was canceled due to lightning) and with uncertainty surrounding the availability of starting quarterback and true freshman Adrian Martinez. New coach Scott Frost inherited what was expected to be a project, but a loss to Troy last week has the program at a low they were not expecting in his first season at the helm.

How to watch Michigan vs Nebraska

When: Noon

Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor.

TV: Fox Sports 1.

Radio: WWJ-AM (950), WTKA-AM (1050).

This is a game Michigan should win. Nebraska will arrive ready to play after being stunned at home by Troy to fall to 0-2 but Scott Frost needs more time to get the Husker program to a point where they’re contending with a Top 25 team on the road. Shea Patterson has emerged as the Wolverines best player on offense and should play an even bigger role in this game. The offensive line faces quality Nebraska pass rush but they’ll meet the challenge well enough to allow for some big plays in the passing game. The availability of Adrian Martinez will have an impact on how close this game is, but shouldn’t make the difference between a win or a loss.

Matchup to Watch

Michigan front 7 vs Nebraska run offense. Nebraska’s best opportunity to move the ball and put the Wolverines on upset alert would be to control the game on the ground. Assuming Martinez is out, if Michigan stops the run, Nebraska will struggle to move the ball consistently.

Score Prediction

Michigan 37, Nebraska 13
